Lucknow: The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Lucknow, in collaboration with Help U Foundation, organized a Cancer Awareness Day Program aimed at spreading awareness about various types of cancer, their prevention, and the importance of early detection.
The event was presided over by Prof. Manuka Khanna, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lucknow, who lauded the institute’s efforts in promoting social responsibility and public health awareness among students and the community.
The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Dr. Rupal Agarwal, Trustee, Help U Educational and Charitable Trust, who extended a warm welcome to the Vice Chancellor, distinguished guests, medical experts, faculty members, and students. She highlighted that the initiative marks an important step by the University in strengthening public health education and encouraging preventive healthcare practices.
Prominent medical experts from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (DRRMLIMS) addressed the gathering and shared their expertise on different types of cancer:

Dr. Hemant Kumar Agarwal, Professor, Respiratory Medicine, spoke about lung cancer, underlining the dangers of both active and passive smoking. He noted that quitting smoking not only enhances health but also leads to financial savings that, if invested wisely, could yield substantial long-term benefits—linking health to economic well-being.

Dr. Shikha Srivastava, Senior Gynecologist, discussed cervical cancer prevention, emphasizing regular Pap tests, HPV vaccination, and self-examination for breast cancer. Quoting Madame Curie, she reminded the audience that, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be fought.”

Dr. Shaili Mahajan, Professor and Head, Department of Dentistry, elaborated on oral cancer, stressing that it is entirely preventable through good oral hygiene and avoidance of tobacco products. She inspired students with the slogan “Ruko, Roko, Toko” (Stop, Prevent, Intervene).

Dr. Pooja Singh, Dermatologist, highlighted the risks of skin cancer due to prolonged sun exposure and urged regular skin check-ups, use of sunscreen, and timely medical consultation for any abnormal skin changes.
In his concluding address, Prof. Pushpendra Kumar Tripathi, Director, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, expert speakers, and organizing committee members. He said the enlightening discussions made the event impactful and reinforced the importance of awareness and prevention in combating cancer.
Prof. Tripathi also acknowledged the support of the University administration and affirmed that similar community outreach and awareness initiatives will continue to be organized in the future.
The program was efficiently coordinated and conducted by Dr. Lubna Azmi, Dr. Pranati Srivastava, Ms. Kiran Singh, and Dr. Soumya Singh, Assistant Professors at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
